Young Friends of Gillingham DofE Open Award Centre

YOUNG FRIENDS OF Gillingham DofEOAC are a group of young people currently doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. YFO exists to contribute towards helping all young people to take part in probably the most prestigious award that can be earned outside of school.

When we meet?

We meet at Gillingham School, usually fortnightly after school, to plan events and train. Fundraising events can be on other days or at weekends

What is in it for you?

YFO can be used for either or both Skill and Service Sections of the DofE Award. Among the skills you can learn and increase confidence in are Life Skills, Presentation Skills, Teamwork, Leadership, Planning and Preparation, How to Fundraise and Apply for Grant Aid and Committee skills.  Service Section includes helping younger DofE members at training or on hikes or camps, (Suitable for Gold and Silver entrants) or helping staff with preparation for camps or hikes and taking part in fundraising events. 

Extra awards can also be earned such as the Gillingham Town Council Youth Award, Dorset Youth Awards and local and International Lions Club Awards. It is hoped to start a Young Leader Award soon which will give other valuable life experiences and add even more to your Records of Achievement.

Who runs YFO?

YFO is led by Tony Baverstock, ex Senior Youth Worker for Dorset Council and Pam Potter, Treasurer.

Mission Statement

  1. To raise funds to enable Gillingham DofE Open Award Centre Committee to be able to continue to fulfil their objectives as set out in their Mission Statement.
  2. To offer opportunities for young people to be able to undertake their Skill
    or Community Service Sections of the DofE Award Scheme.
  3. To discover the joy and honour that comes from within when helping others
  4. To increase self-confidence.
  5. To give young people the chance to make choices for themselves.
  6. To earn extra accreditation including the Dorset Youth Awards and the Gillingham Town Council Youth Awards.
