To achieve your Gold Award, you need to complete an extra section – the Residential. This involves spending 5 days and 4 nights away from home on a shared activity in a group of people who have never met each other before, all in the same role and aiming to achieve shared objectives. You also have to be in shared accommodation – bunkhouse, hostel, camping, dormitory…………viking longhouse………….
It’s a big, exciting and very fulfilling experience that you will never forget. It may be that you want to build on a talent you’ve developed in another section, learn something completely new on an intensive course or do something to help others. From learning to snowboard in Scotland to helping at a children’s camp; working with the National Trust to helping on an urban recycling project; learning French in Paris to sailing a tall ship, there are loads of exciting possibilities to find the activity that’s just right for you.
There are specific criteria you must fulfill, see the Residential guide here, but the opportunities are wide ranging in all respects, including cost.
Dorset offers three amazing and unique Residentials at each of the County’s Outdoor Education Centres during the summer. Read about them below and contact us us for more details and booking form.

Gold Residential near Salisbury Mon 22 to Fri 26 July 2019. £335
Do you have an interest in history and archaeology and enjoy working outside? Then why not join us for your Gold Residential? The week will focus ancient building construction & repair: tools & techniques, and introduces students to a variety of other ancient skills including archery and fire-making.
This unique Gold Residential experience will take place at The Ancient Technology Centre in Dorset alongside Dorset County Council’s qualified and experienced Outdoor Education staff. The Centre is situated on the edge of Cranborne village and within the Cranborne Chase AONB, and houses several reconstructed buildings from the Stone Age to Viking periods.
The main focus of the week is to learn traditional construction methods, using authentic tools and to complete a range of repair, maintenance and construction tasks on site. This will run each day, alongside other skills/activities. There will also be the opportunity for free time for participants after the main activities have finished for the day.
Past examples have included thatched buildings, building a roof and building watercourse from the Roman water lifting machine to the vegetable allotment. Participants will also be given the chance to experience other “hands on” ancient skills which could include traditional fire making, authentic cookery, rope and cordage making, monolith moving and storytelling.
Your accommodation will be in our fantastic Viking Longhouse – the only one of its kind in the UK. Please note that the accommodation is open plan, with communal sleeping in a hall. Participants should treat this as ‘indoor’ camping
